Profile

Roland Young (b.1953 – d.2023) created intricate, curious drawings through which he depicted and recreated the world around him. He laid out crisp, minimal landscapes with delicately repeated formations of abstract forms and figures. Many of Roland’s works portray recurrent themes of parades, tournaments, crowds or intimate gatherings. In each, Roland recreated meticulously ordered ‘line-ups’ often found in stadiums, theatre arrangements or military displays to craft unique and intriguing scenarios of celebration. Each figure is unique with delicate, characterful facial expressions. Every drawing holds a story, that would morph and change when Roland would occasionally talk about the subjects of his drawings; at other times he would keep the drawings a mystery.
